U.S. Geological Survey 3DEP: Data License and Attribution
Last updated: 29 June 2026
1. Overview
This product uses USGS 3DEP elevation data (U.S. Geological Survey, 3D Elevation Program) to create 3D terrain. The elevation data is processed into a heightmap texture that is then used to build the terrain. This document provides the attribution required for the data used in this product (given on behalf of this product and its publisher). If you distribute a project that uses terrain created with this product (or a heightmap texture generated from this data), you must also include the credit in Section 4 in your own project's credits.
2. Data source
USGS 3DEP (3D Elevation Program) is the U.S. Geological Survey's national elevation program, made available through The National Map.
3. Terms of use
The U.S. Geological Survey states the following terms for data from The National Map:
"Map services and data downloaded from The National Map are free and in the public domain. There are no restrictions; however, we request that the following acknowledgment statement of the originating agency be included in products and data derived from our map services when citing, copying, or reprinting: 'Map services and data available from U.S. Geological Survey, National Geospatial Program.'"
4. Required credit
This product value-adds USGS data and resells it, so it uses the USGS "value-adding for resale" credit form. Include the following credit for this data (and in your own project's credits if you distribute a project that uses this heightmap texture or terrain built from it):
"Source of 3DEP elevation data: U.S. Geological Survey."
The USGS general acknowledgment form is also acceptable for derived products: "Map services and data available from U.S. Geological Survey, National Geospatial Program."
5. Commercial use
The data is in the public domain with no restrictions on use, including commercial use, as stated in the terms quoted in Section 3.
6. Modifications
This product generates a heightmap texture from elevation data that has been modified and processed.
